SUMMARY:Fundraising Dinner at Ishbilia
DESCRIPTION:EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR REFUGEES IN FREEZING CONDITIONS \nAs you many know\, I have organised an emergency fundraiser for the (mainly Syrian) refugees in Lebanon\, who suffering through one of the worst storms in the region’s history \n5 days ago\, the storm brought snow\, ice and freezing conditions to Lebanon and Jordan\, and left a number of vulnerable old and young refugees dead in its wake. \nDue to the severity of the situation and the need for immediate action\, I teamed up with Mosaic Syria\, a registered charity run by good friends of mine. Mosaic will give 100% of all donations directly to families in refugee camps\, providing them with fuel vouchers to enable them to purchase gas to fire their stoves\, keep their dwellings warm and cook their food. \nWe have organised a dinner at Ishbilia in Knightsbridge for this Wednesday 14th January at 8pm. \nIshbilia have agreed to provide us with a full feast for £100/head – £50 of this will be going directly to help families stay warm. \nWe would love to see you there\, you can purchase your dinner tickets by donating on:https://www.justgiving.com/mosaicemergencyappeal/ \nSuggested minimum donation is £100 \nIf you are able to come to the dinner\, please leave a message with your donation and let us know how many places you would like. I need to confirm numbers with the restaurant by Monday evening\, so please let me know if you can make it. \nIf you can also please help by spreading the word and sharing this event with as many people as possible\, that would help greatly. \nEvery second counts while these poor people are out there in the freezing cold. \nLet’s get together\, be thankful for what we have\, and send a little warmth out there. \nThank you

SUMMARY:Running for Education
DESCRIPTION:Our supporters Ali Alzein\, Khaled Al Marei and Khalid Khalifa are running 25km in support of education in Syria\, they have created individual pages on Justgiving to raise funds\, please support them so these projects will be carried on and help us to provide education for students in Syria \n  \nPlease donate generously and support our team \n\nTo Support Khaled: https://www.justgiving.com/Khaled25Km\nTo Support Ali: https://www.justgiving.com/Ali-Alzein\nTo Support Khalid Khalifa: https://www.justgiving.com/Khalifa25K\n\nWe have been working closely to re-establish secondary schooling in some of the worst hit areas in Syria. Over the past two years we came across wonderful teenagers with burning passion to go back to school and get their future back. \nTwo generations of them have now passed on to university but recently this year we’ve hit against a brick wall.. In the town of one of our key schools the bombing has escalated to a level that parents are too worried about the risk of having 300 of their children in one place\, not fortified against the constant bombardment. \nWe desperately need to move the school from a near-open air place to a new building with reinforced concrete roof in the town of Al-Rastan. \nWe have raised over 10 thousand pounds just about half the cost of moving. Ali Alzein\, Khaled Al Marei and Khalid Khalifa are running to help make that happen before the start of the school day in September. \nFor more details\, download the Thames Path Challenge Brochure \nIf you would like to be there on the day to support our team\, please email us on: info@mosaicsyria.org

SUMMARY:Art of Resistance: Live Auction
DESCRIPTION:oin us in celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA)\, and in supporting their initiative The Art of Resistance: Defending Academic Freedom. \n\nCARA has been upholding academic freedom since 1933\, when it was founded to provide shelter to academics persecuted under the rise of Nazism and Fascism across Europe. Karl Popper\, Sigmund Freud and Max Born were amongst the first beneficiaries of CARA’s work\, which has supported eighteen Nobel laureates\, and continues to provide periods of sanctuary to academics at risk in countries like Iraq\, Syria\, Zimbabwe\, Sudan\, South Africa\, and former Yugoslavia\, including many in the fields of art\, drama\, literature and music. CARA is currently running a campaign in support of Syrian academics: their fellowship scheme helps those who have had to flee to neighbouring countries or who fear for their safety in Syria. It also helps students and academics stranded in the UK due to Syrian funding being cut off or blocked\, who may have lost contact with close family members\, or worse\, may have lost them to the conflict.\n\nCARA has launched an art auction\, which includes works by Syrian artists Samer Saem Eldahrand Hazar Bakbachi-Henriot\, showcased at P21 last summer as part of our exhibition#withoutwords: Emerging Syrian Artists. Their work will be up for grabs at the live auction that will take place on the 5th December 2013 in London. The capacity on the evening will be limited. To register please e-mail cara.campaign@lsbu.ac.uk OR call 0207 021 0880 (you can also use these contact details to make absentee bids). \n\n\nThe auction is available online at: www.paddle8.com/auctions/cara. \n\nOther international artists featured include Edmund de Waal\, Maggi Hambling\, Jeremy Deller\, Hanaa Malallah\, Mohammed al-Shammarey\, Ralph Steadman and Quentin Blake. SUMMARY:UK Premiere of True Stories of Love\, Life\, Death and Sometimes Revolution + directors Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Mosaic Syria and P21 invite you to \nUK FILM PREMIERE\nTrue Stories of Love\, Life\, Death\nand Sometimes Revolution\n+ directors Q&A \nNidal Hassan & Lilibeth C. Rasmussen | Denmark/Syria 2012 | 65’\nwith an exclusive screening of Four Questions In a Tea Break\n\n\nThu 29 Aug\, 6:45pm\nP21 Gallery\, 21 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\nEntry: £7\, please book your tickets in advance below \nA film about Syrian women’s personal battles for freedom turns into thefirst-hand account of an entire people’s struggle as the uprising begins. \nThe Danish artist Lilibeth Cuenca arrived in Damascus in March 2011 to make a film with Nidal Hassan. The next day\, the Syrian people’s uprising broke out. The film the two had actually planned about Syrian women’s struggle for a life in freedom suddenly turned into something completely different: a film about an entire people’s struggle for freedom. The two quickly decided to travel around between Damascus\, Sweida and Ein Al Arab to gather firsthand stories about love\, life and death – three topics that suddenly became all the more important in the light of the revolution. But the production of the film itself became equally dramatic. After Lilibeth’s return to Denmark\, friends and acquaintances started disappearing\, while Nidal continued to document the Syrian’s fight against the regime – until he also disappeared for a longer period\, and left behind him a void of fear for his life. But Nidal returned\, and the film\, which is commissioned by DOX:LAB\, is now complete. A film which more than any other is made of blood\, sweat and tears – and the hope for a better future. \nFour Questions in a Tea Break (2012)\nEyas Al Mokdad | Syria 2012 | 9’ \nDuring a tea break\, a Free Syrian Army fighter answers four questions that many may want to ask. Four questions that could answer many others. \nThe exhibition #withoutwords\, presented by Mosaic Syria and P21 Gallery\, showcases fine art and visual installations from emerging Syrian artists influenced by the desperate humanitarian situation in Syria and the struggle of their people for freedom.

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Syrias + Q&A with director and producer Yasmin Fedda
DESCRIPTION:Thu 8 Aug\, 6:45pm\nP21 Gallery\, 21 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\nEntry: £7 on the door or book your tickets below \nA snapshot of life before Syria’s uprising began\, from two very different perspectives. \nSyria/UK\, 2012\, 65 min. \nThis consistently insightful and unexpected documentary follows the lives of an Iraqi fashion designer and a Syrian monk\, both living in Syria in 2010. It offers a unique perspective on what the dream of freedom means to two very different people and provides a vital snapshot of life in the year before Syria’s uprising. \n“The witty humanity of her two portraits of these men subtly highlights the brutality of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime without laboring the point.”\nRachel Haliburton\, The Majalla \n“The equivalent of a film thermometer\, this is a fascinating way of taking the Syrian temperature…In some ways\, this is a contemporary echo of Budayri\, The Barber of Damascus – a Syrian barber who kept a diary during the mid-eighteenth century which chronicled the downfall of the Ottoman Empire. The diary survives as an important historical document and useful insight into what happened and why”\nClare Dean\, Mostly Film

SUMMARY:Freedom Beats
DESCRIPTION:“Mosaic Initiative for Syria” proudly presents to you a charity concert and spoken word event\, featuring Syrian/American hip-hop artist Omar Offendum and other local artists & poets. \nLove has always been the biggest inspiration for any lyricist and oppression comes a very close second. Freedom Beats comes at a time when tensions are still running high during this ongoing Syrian uprising\, and brings together -for one evening only- like minded musicians to lyrically battle against social injustice and to fight for freedom. \nIn an attempt to bridge the divide between Western and Arabic worlds and provide an understanding between the two cultures\, our headlining artist Offendum translates classic Arabic poetry into English with a heavy underlying message of activism and social justice; Offendum’s concert is one not to be missed! \nMusic has always had the magic of giving people a sense of unity and understanding. For Syrians it has become not just a state of mind\, but a way of life\, a way of empowering the people’s uprise by expressing their rebellion through the power of music. \nJoin us in expressing our beats through the hip and hop of freedom and unity. \nAll funds raised will go to support the suffering in Syria

SUMMARY:Syrian Uprising … One year on\, Fundraising Gala
DESCRIPTION:Following the Arab League monitors’ withdrawal from Syria in early 2012\, violence has increased significantly and the humanitarian situation in the country continues to deteriorate. The Bab ‘Amr district of the city has come under intensive shelling since the beginning of February: “The accounts we are hearing from Homs are increasingly dire\, with people lacking the most basic amenities\,” said Ann Harrison\, interim Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme. Residents of Bab ‘Amr have told Amnesty International that the shelling and exchanges of fire have destroyed the electricity and water networks\, and there is little prospect of them being restored. Because of the lack of electricity\, residents are unable to refrigerate food\, adding to already severe shortages of food\, including babies’ milk. The area is also facing a critical shortage of medical supplies and medical personnel. \nIn answer to this desperate need for humanitarian relief by the Syrian people inside Syria as well as in Syrian refugee camps in neighbouring countries\, Mosaic Initiative for Syria is pleased to announce its fundraising gala supporting Syrian artists and showcasing Syrian culture to a UK audience\, as part of the festival\, Reel Syria 2012\, March 15-18. \nJoin us in marking the one-year anniversary of the uprising in Syria on Saturday 17th March 2012 at Kensington Town Hall. \n\nCome and spend the afternoon wandering around our Syrian-style bazaar\, sampling traditional food from the region\, then take the opportunity to watch a series of short Syrian films.\nIn the evening is our fundraising gala\, featuring the world-renowned Syrian composer\, singer and poet\, Samih Choukeir\, as well as a performance by Khyam Allami on the oud. There will also be an audience with Ali Farzat\, the celebrated Syrian political cartoonist.\n\nIt is sure to be an event to remember\, so save the date and let’s come together in solidarity with the Syrian people\, celebrating their courage during this violent repression of their basic freedoms and human rights. \nAll proceeds from this event will benefit the communities affected by the current humanitarian crisis in Syria. \nWe want to thank the Asfari Foundation for their generous support\, without which this event would not be possible. \nTicket Price £25 + £1 Online booking fee
