The next day\, the Syrian people’s uprising broke out. The film the two had actually planned about Syrian women’s struggle for a life in freedom suddenly turned into something completely different: a film about an entire people’s struggle for freedom. The two quickly decided to travel around between Damascus\, Sweida and Ein Al Arab to gather firsthand stories about love\, life and death – three topics that suddenly became all the more important in the light of the revolution. But the production of the film itself became equally dramatic. After Lilibeth’s return to Denmark\, friends and acquaintances started disappearing\, while Nidal continued to document the Syrian’s fight against the regime – until he also disappeared for a longer period\, and left behind him a void of fear for his life. But Nidal returned\, and the film\, which is commissioned by DOX:LAB\, is now complete. DESCRIPTION:Join #withoutwords artist Ramez Bakir & Tarek Tuma for this 5-week drawing course and help us raise money for Syria. \nThe course will take students through a simple approach to life drawing: from sketching basic shapes\, to drawing a still life. At the end of the course\, students will take up the challenge of drawing a live scene (staged by models) depicting the Syrian uprising. \nMaterials: each trainee is asked to attend with drawing paper (A1 is ideal)\, charcoal\, kidney rubber\, white chalk\, and fixative. Alternatively he/she can purchase a materials pack from the course administrator at the gallery if ordered in advance. \nAbout the tutors \nRamez Bakir:Born in Damascus in 1990\, is a London-based artist whose work is part of the exhibition #withoutwords: Emerging Syrian Artists\, presented by Mosaic Initiative and P21 Gallery. Franco-Syrian artist Hazar Bakbachi-Henriot will be running a drawing workshop demonstrating how to use artistic talent to creatively express yourself. \nHazar Bakbachi-Henriot is a Syrian-born artist whose work has been exhibited in France and in Europe. In conjunction with the organisation Emergency Solidarity Syria\, she organised two-week art workshops\, using materials\, embroidery and tapestry with women in Syrian refugee camps in Turkey\, thirty miles from the Syrian border. Her work is currently exhibited at P21 as part of the exhibition #withoutwords: Emerging Syrian Artists. \nThe workshop is free with courtesy donations for material costs. \nAll proceeds go to Mosaic Initiative\, a UK-registered charity that provides urgent humanitarian assistance\, such as shelter\, medical aid\, food and clothing\, to those who need it most inside Syria and among the refugee communities in neighbouring countries. SUMMARY:#withoutwords: Emerging Syrian Artists
DESCRIPTION:Mosaic Initiative & P21 Gallery present #withoutwords\, an exhibition showcasing fine art and visual installations from emerging Syrian artists influenced by the desperate humanitarian situation in Syria and the struggle of their people for freedom. Taking place at London’s P21 Gallery and open to the public from June 27 running until September 01\, the exhibition features a mix of paintings\, photography\, metalwork\, installations\, political cartoons and sculptures. \nSome of the exhibited work has been smuggled out of Syria and will be exhibited abroad for the first time. Other pieces have been collected from Lebanon or Jordan or made in the refugee camps of Turkey. SUMMARY:Walk for the Children of Syria
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the revolution in March 2013\, over 2\,500 children’s lives have been claimed. Many are now orphaned or have lost a sibling\, uncle\, aunt\, grandparent or a friend. Many are homeless\, displaced or refugees along with their families. \nWalk for the Children of Syria is an international event occurring around the world on the 17th of November to raise awareness about the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and to raise vital funds for the children suffering in Syria. In the UK\, the walk will be occurring in four cities; London\, Manchester\, Cardiff and Glasgow. \nRoute: \nCongregation at Belvedere Street\, we will walk along Westminster Bridge Road over the river. Turn right along Victoria Embankment and walk along the Thames River. Turn left in Northumberland Avenue. Arrive at Trafalgar Square on the upper area near the National gallery and disperse there.

For denouncing the corruption and abuses of Bashar Al-Assad’s rule\, heced tattacked in August by masked gunmen\, who broke his hands as a warning. \nIn 2011\, heced tawarded the Press Freedom Prize by Reporters Without Borders and Le Monde. SUMMARY:Syrian Uprising … One year on\, Fundraising Gala
DESCRIPTION:Following the Arab League monitors’ withdrawal from Syria in early 2012\, violence has increased significantly and the humanitarian situation in the country continues to deteriorate. The Bab ‘Amr district of the city has come under intensive shelling since the beginning of February: “The accounts we are hearing from Homs are increasingly dire\, with people lacking the most basic amenities\,” said Ann Harrison\, interim Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme. Residents of Bab ‘Amr have told Amnesty International that the shelling and exchanges of fire have destroyed the electricity and water networks\, and there is little prospect of them being restored. Because of the lack of electricity\, residents are unable to refrigerate food\, adding to already severe shortages of food\, including babies’ milk. The area is also facing a critical shortage of medical supplies and medical personnel. \nIn answer to this desperate need for humanitarian relief by the Syrian people inside Syria as well as in Syrian refugee camps in neighbouring countries\, Mosaic Initiative for Syria is pleased to announce its fundraising gala supporting Syrian artists and showcasing Syrian culture to a UK audience\, as part of the festival\, Reel Syria 2012\, March 15-18. \nJoin us in marking the one-year anniversary of the uprising in Syria on Saturday 17th March 2012 at Kensington Town Hall. \n\nCome and spend the afternoon wandering around our Syrian-style bazaar\, sampling traditional food from the region\, then take the opportunity to watch a series of short Syrian films.\nIn the evening is our fundraising gala\, featuring the world-renowned Syrian composer\, singer and poet\, Samih Choukeir\, as well as a performance by Khyam Allami on the oud.
