Government Review: The Restriction of Asylum Seekers’ Right to Workimage

13 Aug 2020

The Government is currently reviewing its policy on the restriction of asylum seekers’ right to work. Right now, the position is that people seeking asylum can only apply for permission to work if they have been waiting for an initial decision on their asylum claim for over 12 months. At the same time, those who are granted permission can only take skilled jobs that are on the Shortage Occupation List. The Mosaic Initiative team hope that the policy will be less restrictive and more accessible for those looking to rebuild their future in the UK. We are all aware that one of the main contributors to integration is employment. To have to wait for a full year, following your journey and the reason you were forced to leave your home is damaging. It also reduces new arrivals ability to meet their own needs and to contribute to the growth of the British economy. Diversity is strength and the Mosaic Initiative team stands with asylum seekers and refugees.
