The upsurge of migrants, often-escaping civil war in Syria and Libya, has heightened the pressure on the borders of southern European countries including Greece. According to Tasia Christodoulopoulo, the alternate Minister for Migration Policy, Greece can expect up to 100,000 migrants to cross its borders in 2015. Athens (dpa) – Greece on Tuesday said Syrian refugees who qualify for asylum would be given all necessary documents immediately as part of emergency measures to deal with the surge of migrants and refugees entering the country. “Recently, an increased influx of refugees has been observed for the same reasons that, at the same exact period, there has been a strongly rising trend of refugee influx to Italy as well,” said Government spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis following a government meeting on the issue. “From the initial records, it appears that the motive of the majority of these people is not financial hardship but an immediate threat to their lives,” he added. Sakellarides said the government will carry out immediate plans to create camps and shelters on the mainland for the tens of thousands of migrants and refugees currently trapped on the Greek islands after entering the country by sea from neighboring Turkey. He said newly arrived migrants will be transported from the islands to the mainland, where authorities will separate asylum seekers from migrants.
